The Resistant Viewer
Photo Ranger Cecilia has written this article on being a ‘Resistant Viewer’. She makes a very good argument about learning to disconnect from commercialism to be better photographers (and a better person in general). Here’s a small quote, now go check out the whole essay.
“As photographers, there’s a need, I think, to be able to see an image outside the influence of commercialism. On the one hand, we need to be able to identify and use that commercial perception. But on the other, we also need to be able to detach ourselves from that sphere of influence, and see the image itself as a subject, and not use our personal (and commercially influenced) point of view to judge the subject within the image. In other words, there is a need to be resistant viewers if we are to learn to develop our skills as photographers.”
